The battleship on wheels
Another thing I've grown to be very passionate about is my pop's old school 1967 Pontiac Tempest station wagon. It's been in the family over 40 years since the day he drove it off brand new from the Downey dealership. Unfortunately, it's in need of a little TLC and restoration. With a little help from kcrw audio engineer, Mario Diaz and mail guru, Jason Groman, we'll be bringing new life to this once beautiful land yacht. I have so many fond memories of family vacations we'd take in that wagon. I still remember vividly where I was on December 8, 1980. We were fueling up at a gas station in Tucson, Arizona when I heard the DJ on the radio break the news that John Lennon had died! We were on our way to my Aunt's wedding in the wonderful little town of Empalme, Sonora in Mexico. I would always get tossed in the back along with the luggage... great times! Being the youngest of seven, with three older brothers and sisters, they've each had a chance to use and abuse the wagon over the years. For a brief period during my college years, it was my transportation to and from Cal Poly Pomona. That could not go on too long. Even back then gas was too expensive for a starving student driving a big engine V8 beast. Today, it's a different story. Hopefully, we'll get to see the transformation over the next few months. We'll be updating the blog with images of mechanical and aesthetic improvements to this rare and nostalgic vehicle that means so much to me.
